To a non-celebrity, receiving fan mail might seem like a perk of being in the public eye, but to the famous themselves, it can lead them down some very strange paths. There have been countless occasions when celebrities have received letters or parcels that have some, erm… questionable contents. In part 2 two of our Strangest Things blog series, we’ll take a look at some of the most bizarre fan mail that some of the world’s most famous people have ever received.
Barack Obama is perhaps one of the most famous people in the world, so it’s no surprise that he’s received some pretty weird fan mail over the years. One of the strangest items Obama has ever received was a letter from a man who claimed to be his “real father.” The man asked Obama to meet him for a DNA test, and needless to say, Obama declined. But what if he was telling the truth?
Jared Leto is no stranger to weird stuff, his commitment to method acting has often rubbed others up the wrong way as well as his generally bizarre behaviour, so when he got an ear in the mail with a note attached that read ‘are you listening?’, it didn’t faze him. In fact, instead of being creeped out by someone that unstable having his home address, he embraced the gesture, drying out the ear and wearing it as a necklace whilst performing with his terrible band 30 Seconds to Mars.
Emma Watson received some extraordinarily weird packages in the post during the latter years of her time playing Hermione in the Harry Potter film franchise. She began receiving numerous Holy Bibles from senders who declared the films to be ‘un-Christian’ and claimed they were trying to save her soul from eternal damnation.
Here’s a one that’s stranger than fiction, an aspiring singer named Rodrigo Ruiz claimed that Jennifer Lopez promised to give him a leg up in the music industry, but only if he sent her pictures of his private parts. According to Ruiz, Lopez promised to further his career in exchange for the nudes. When Lopez didn’t, he filed a lawsuit against her for $10k. Lopez’s camp denied Lopez had any part in the offer and, as it turns out, Ruiz has been sending the photos to a completely different middle-aged Los Angeles woman, who apparently, will go to extreme lengths for nudes.
Madonna is no stranger to receiving strange fan mail either. In one instance, she received a letter from a man who claimed that he was Jesus Christ reincarnated. He even asked her to join him on his “mission” to save the world!
Singer Pink revealed the strangest piece of fan mail she had ever received was a survival kit sent to her in 2006. The kit included a 16-page letter that informed her that she would be welcomed with open arms into a cult. The kit contained everything required for Pink to travel to the residence in which ‘the cult’ resided and that they were awaiting her eventual arrival into their ranks. Pink turned down the offer, but we’re sure some of the contents will come in handy at some point.
Whilst some celebrities probably wish they’d never received some of the bizarre mail that was forced on them, others welcome it. Singer Ke$ha received a tooth from a fan in the post and rather than being weirded out, began to ask other fans to do the same so she could turn them into a necklace. Within a year she’d received over a thousand human teeth, which she had turned into a top, a headdress, and a set of earrings.
Another celebrity who’s received some pretty strange fan mail is Transformer’s actress Megan Fox. She once revealed that she’d received a letter from a fan that was covered in poo! Apparently, the crazed fan had been following her for years and decided to send her the disgusting letter as a way of getting her attention. It worked, they’ve been married ever since and have 3 beautiful children together. I’m joking.
